Digital Marketing – why does it matter to me?

“Soon the digital divide will not be between the haves and the have-nots. It will be between the know-hows and the non-know-hows.” Howard Rheingold

In recent years I have become increasingly aware of the reality of Howard Rheingold’s quote. The digital world is not just a temporary ‘phase’ for those who are interested, or good at ‘that sort of thing’ it’s the reality of progress – much as in previous centuries the invention of the printing press resulted in seismic changes. I’m a 56-year-old woman who enjoys turning the pages on a ‘proper’ book, chatting to someone in a bank branch and paying for shopping with cash. The online digital world is a foreign country to me and one, up until recently, I had little interest in exploring. I believe that many in my generation and those who are older also fear this digital world and risk becoming ‘left behind’ as so much of life is now experienced in the digital world

“Social media is changing the way we communicate and the way we are perceived, both positively and negatively. Every time you post a photo, or update your status, you are contributing to your own digital footprint and personal brand.” Amy Jo Martin

Traditionally marketing has taken place in a static space which you negotiate with a person to agree a price. Subsequently this advertising is circulated for a set period of time, for example billboards, adverts on television and radio continue to operate in this way. However, increasingly digital marketing is used extremely effectively and the good news is that everyone is able to access digital marketing and benefit from it. Digital marketing is the cheapest way for any business or individual to reach the greatest number of people

Digital marketing is great for all businesses because it's about telling stories, building relationships, and providing value, not just selling; it's about meeting customers where they are online with relevant content, making them feel smart, and creating a community, emphasising adaptation, data, and authenticity over just "stuff" or hard selling, making it essential for reaching modern consumers effectively.

So, I’ve decided that I need to journey into this foreign digital country – thankfully knowing that Gingerbread Analytics is there to offer support and companionship. Maybe it’s time to stop being fearful and to embrace the joys, excitement and opportunities of the digital world, to concur with the wisdom of the insightful Brené Brown who reflects that: “Maybe stories are just data with a soul.”

It would be great if you are willing to undertake this journey too….
